WHO NEEDS HUNTING PRESERVES?
Public hunting on private lands has declined steadily since 1960. Private landowners were faced with increasing costs of production, increasing taxes, and low income relative to investment of time, labor, and money. Intensive farming seemed to be the only answer. Every available acre was put into cultivation with very little habitat left for waterfowl and upland game once the crops were harvested. These practices played havoc with habitat and wildlife. Unfortunately, the availability of so called "open hunting" lands diminished in the process. Public hunting areas are at an all time low. For years now, there has been a crying need for more improved wildlife habitat and more hunting opportunities. FARMSTEAD has stepped in to help fill that need. Hard flying game birds are available in abundance. You may set your own "bag limits", and you can enjoy hunting seasons that are eight months long. Aldo Leopold, the "Father of Wildlife Management" in the early 1900's, recognized the fact that private landowners were the custodians of public wildlife. He realized economic incentives for the land owner would be necessary to ensure viable populations of game.
IS THIS REAL HUNTING?
Hunting at FARMSTEAD can be far more "sporty" than so called "open hunting" on most farm lands. This is because the "cover" and wildlife habitat are so much better developed. It is a sorry fact that there is now more wildlife habitat and "escape cover" on a good hunting resort than there is on a hundred average farms after the crops are harvested. Sportsmen now say, "The only difference in "open hunting" and hunting on a quality hunting resort is that you practically set your own seasons and bag limits, and you know the birds are there."
